With 2,664,452 people, 1,146,547 houses or apartments, and a median cost of homes of $396,612, Chicago real estate prices are well above average cost compared to national prices.

Large apartment complexes or high rise apartments are the single most common housing type in Chicago, accounting for 42.44% of the city's housing units. Other types of housing that are prevalent in Chicago include duplexes, homes converted to apartments or other small apartment buildings ( 28.10%), single-family detached homes ( 25.61%), and a few row houses and other attached homes ( 3.56%). This particular housing mix is relatively uncommon and characteristic of cities that are compact and walkable, and which often have a lively downtown.

People in Chicago primarily live in small (one, two or no bedroom) units, chiefly found in large apartment complexes or high rise apartments. Chicago has a mixture of owner-occupied and renter-occupied housing.

The housing in Chicago was primarily built before 1939 ( 39.13%), making the housing stock in Chicago some of the oldest overall in America, although there is a range of ages of homes in Chicago. The next most important housing age is between 1940-1969 ( 29.43%), followed by between 1970-1999 ( 17.74%). There's also some housing in Chicago built between 2000 and later ( 13.70%).
